ABILITY Magazine Interview: Shayne Smith
-
0:06 - 0:10Make sure you get my good side,
which is, like, all of this. -
0:10 - 0:13I think the biggest thing that
people need to know, in this world, -
0:13 - 0:16is that there is no limit, right?
-
0:16 - 0:18We always hear the saying:
"The sky's the limit." -
0:18 - 0:20How many times
have you been told: -
0:20 - 0:22"You can do whatever you want,
the sky is the limit!" -
0:22 - 0:24"You can get there!"
Well, I think that's a load of BS. -
0:24 - 0:26Sitting here saying, "the sky's the limit"
-
0:26 - 0:28well, we have footprints on the Moon,
-
0:28 - 0:31we have Felix Baumgartner
skydiving from space. -
0:31 - 0:33Now tell me the sky's the limit.
-
0:33 - 0:35When I was four months old,
-
0:35 - 0:39I contracted a rare form of meningitis
called meningococcal septicaemia. -
0:39 - 0:43What it did was it attacked my bloodstream
so all the blood in my body stopped. -
0:43 - 0:44The doctors had to find where,
-
0:44 - 0:47amputate my left hand, my legs,
and some fingers on the right. -
0:47 - 0:50Everyone always says to me:
"Oh my gosh Shayne! -
0:50 - 0:53You're so incredible, you're so strong,
you're so amazing! -
0:53 - 0:55You have such a big heart,
you have a great heart." -
0:55 - 1:00And really my answer to that
always is, you know, -
1:00 - 1:03I got it from my mama!
-
1:03 - 1:06My mom not only did all this,
but she did it on her own. -
1:06 - 1:10My dad split, alright,
so my mom really was -
1:10 - 1:14mom, dad, taxi driver, you know,
basketball coach, hockey coach. -
1:14 - 1:16My mom was everything.
-
1:16 - 1:18I've got to do some really cool things.
-
1:18 - 1:21Out of 60,000 kids,
I was chosen at 12 years old -
1:21 - 1:22to have lunch with Nelson Mandela.
-
1:22 - 1:26At 25, probably the greatest experience
I'll ever have in my entire life -
1:26 - 1:28came at 12 years old!
-
1:28 - 1:31When I looked at Nelson Mandela and
I said: "Mister Mandela, -
1:31 - 1:34Sir, it's an honor for me to meet you."
-
1:34 - 1:38And he looks down at me and
he puts his hand on my shoulder, -
1:38 - 1:40and Nelson Mandela replies to me:
-
1:40 - 1:43"No my child, it's an honor that
I got to share a meal with you." -
1:43 - 1:46I played basketball for about 17 years.
-
1:46 - 1:48Hum, I played on
the junior national team in Canada. -
1:48 - 1:52And it's a very proud thing
for me to be able to say -
1:52 - 1:56I am the only player with
half a hand to do that in History. -
1:56 - 1:59So for me that's really cool to say.
-
1:59 - 2:02I played basketball at a gym called
Variety Village in Toronto -
2:02 - 2:07and it's a sports and training facility
for people with all kinds of challenges... -
2:07 - 2:12...and not.
So it's a training facility for everybody. -
2:12 - 2:14And I was there to promote them.
-
2:14 - 2:17And afterwards everyone came up to me
at 8 years old and said: -
2:17 - 2:20"You should really do this for a living,
you're really good at it!" -
2:20 - 2:22Then I gave another one,
and another one... -
2:22 - 2:25and now at 25, I run a speaking company.
-
2:25 - 2:27Hum, my favorite exercise that
-
2:27 - 2:29I run with the kids
when I do my speaking is -
2:29 - 2:31I'd get them to tell me something
that they love to do. -
2:31 - 2:32So, you know, I'm gonna,
I'm gonna do it with you. -
2:32 - 2:35Give me anything that you love to do.
"Sing" -
2:35 - 2:36Are you the best at it?
"Yes, I am." -
2:36 - 2:39Louder.
"Yes, I am!" -
2:39 - 2:42I quickly tell them:
Well, now, you know, -
2:42 - 2:45Imagine if we were all to decide that
we were the best at something -
2:45 - 2:46on a daily basis.
-
2:46 - 2:49How powerful and incredible
this building would be? Always. -
2:49 - 2:51And then, I don't exclude
myself from it. -
2:51 - 2:52So I tell them, you know,
-
2:52 - 2:55Best one-handed wheelchair
basketball player in the world. -
2:55 - 2:57I think, I do.
I believe that that's me. -
2:57 - 3:02Rap. I think I'm the best
white disabled Jewish rapper -
3:02 - 3:03in the world.
I'm gonna say that too. -
3:03 - 3:05"Great detail"
Right? Right?! -
3:05 - 3:09I mean, I go even farther than that.
This is where I really like to connect -
3:09 - 3:11with them. I tell them that
you know, the only reason why -
3:11 - 3:14Channing Tatum won
sexiest man in the world -
3:14 - 3:16is 'cos the people that write
the articles haven't met me yet. -
3:16 - 3:19I think that 96% of women
fall in love with me -
3:19 - 3:21within 5 minutes of meeting me.
-
3:21 - 3:24But I quickly change that and say:
"Of all these women, -
3:24 - 3:27why it's so easy for them
to fall in love with me -
3:27 - 3:29is because I'm
in love with me." -
3:29 - 3:32And that's where it starts, right?
As soon as you can love -
3:32 - 3:35who you are, like,
truly love who you are, -
3:35 - 3:38it is very easy for other people
to love you, right? -
Not Synced(rap music)
