ABILITY Magazine Interview: Shayne Smith
-
Not SyncedMake sure you get my good side,
which is, like, all of this. -
Not SyncedI think the biggest thing that
people need to know, in this world, -
Not Syncedis that there is no limit, right?
-
Not SyncedWe always hear the saying
"The sky's the limit." -
Not SyncedHow many times
have you been told: -
Not Synced"You can do whatever you want,
the sky is the limit!" -
Not Synced"You can get there!"
-
Not SyncedWell, I think that's a load of BS.
-
Not SyncedSitting here saying, "the sky's the limit"
-
Not Syncedwell, we have footprints on the Moon,
-
Not Syncedwe have Felix Baumgartner
skydiving from space. -
Not Synced
Now tell me the sky's the limit. -
Not SyncedWhen I was four months old,
-
Not SyncedI contracted a rare form of meningitis
called meningococcal septicaemia. -
Not SyncedWhat it did was it attacked my bloodstream
so all the blood in my body stopped. -
Not SyncedThe doctors had to find where,
-
Not Syncedamputate my left hand, my legs
and some fingers on the right. -
Not SyncedEveryone always says to me
"Oh my gosh Shayne! -
Not SyncedYou're so incredible, you're so strong,
you're so amazing! -
Not SyncedYou have such a big heart,
You have a great heart." -
Not SyncedAnd really my answer to that
always is, you know -
Not SyncedI got it from my mama!
-
Not SyncedMy mom not only did all this,
but she did it on her own. -
Not SyncedMy dad split, alright,
so my mom really was -
Not Syncedmom, dad, taxi driver, you know,
basketball coach, hockey coach. -
Not SyncedMy mom was everything.
-
Not SyncedI've got to do some really cool things.
-
Not SyncedOut of 60,000 kids,
I was chosen at 12 years old -
Not Syncedto have lunch with Nelson Mandela.
-
Not SyncedAt 25, probably the greatest experience
I'll ever have in my entire life -
Not Syncedcame at 12 years old!
-
Not SyncedWhen I looked at Nelson Mandela and
I said: "Mister Mandela, -
Not SyncedSir, it's an honor for me to meet you."
-
Not SyncedAnd he looks down at me and
he puts his hand on my shoulder -
Not Syncedand Nelson Mandela replies to me:
-
Not Synced"No my child, it's an honor that
I got to share a meal with you." -
Not SyncedI played basketball for about 17 years.
-
Not SyncedHum, I played on
the junior national team in Canada. -
Not SyncedAnd it's a very proud thing
for me to be able to say -
Not SyncedI am the only player with
half a hand to do that in history. -
Not SyncedSo for me that's really cool to say.
-
Not SyncedI played basketball in a gym called
Variety Village in Toronto -
Not Syncedand it's a sports and training facility
for people with all kinds of challenges... -
Not Syncedand not.
So it's a training facility for everybody. -
Not SyncedAnd I was there to promote them.
-
Not SyncedAnd afterwards everyone came up to me
at 8 years old and said: -
Not Synced"You should really do this for a living,
you're really good at it!" -
Not SyncedThen I gave another one
and another one... -
Not Syncedand now at 25, I run a speaking company.
-
Not SyncedHum, my favorite exercise that
I run with the kids -
Not Syncedwhen I do my speaking is
I'd get them to tell me something -
Not Syncedthat they love to do
-
Not SyncedSo you know I'm gonna,
I'm gonna do it with you. -
Not SyncedGive me anything that you love to do.
"Sing" -
Not SyncedAre you the best at it?
"Yes, I am." -
Not SyncedLouder.
"Yes, I am!" -
Not SyncedI quickly tell them
Well, now, you know -
Not SyncedImagine if we were all to decide that
we were the best at something on a daily basis -
Not SyncedHow powerful and incredible
this building would be? -
Not SyncedAlways. And then
I don't exclude myself from it. -
Not SyncedSo I tell them, you know
Best one-handed wheelchair -
Not Syncedbasketball player in the world.
I think, I do. -
Not SyncedI believe that that's me.
-
Not SyncedRap. I think I'm the best
white disabled Jewish rapper -
Not Syncedin the world.
I'm gonna say that too. -
Not Synced"Great detail"
Right? Right?! -
Not SyncedI mean, I go even farther than that.
This is where I really like to connect -
Not Syncedwith them. I tell them that
you know, the only reason why -
Not SyncedChanning Tatum won
sexiest man in the world -
Not Syncedis 'cos the people that write
the articles haven't met me yet. -
Not SyncedI think that 96% of women
fall in love with me -
Not Syncedwithin 5 minutes of meeting me.
-
Not SyncedBut I quickly change that and say
-
Not SyncedOf all these women,
why it's so easy for them -
Not Syncedto fall in love with me is because
I'm in love with me. -
Not SyncedAnd that's where it starts, right?
As soon as you can love -
Not Syncedwho you are, like
truly love who you are -
Not Syncedit is very easy for other people
to love you, right?
