ABILITY Magazine Interview: Howie Mandel
-
0:07 - 0:09Well I don't remember a time that
-
0:09 - 0:10I didn't feel it was an issue but
-
0:10 - 0:13I, it wasn't diagnosed until adulthood.
-
0:13 - 0:14(interviewer): Mmhmm.
-
0:19 - 0:20You know, we take care of our dental health.
-
0:20 - 0:22We don't take care of our mental health.
-
0:22 - 0:23People go get their teeth checked.
-
0:23 - 0:24(interviewer): And it rhymes too.
-
0:24 - 0:26It does. That's why I say it.
-
0:26 - 0:28And when I was growing up. You know.
-
0:28 - 0:29I mean I'm in my mid-50s.
-
0:29 - 0:32Even ADHD was not an issue in school.
-
0:32 - 0:33I mean nobody talked about it.
-
0:33 - 0:35Seems prevalent now.
-
0:35 - 0:37But I would imagine there's
just as many kids now -
0:37 - 0:39That have it as had it when I was a kid.
-
0:39 - 0:42It just wasn't identified
when I was a kid. -
0:42 - 0:43So I was troubled.
-
0:43 - 0:45And I was outrageous you know?
-
0:45 - 0:47I wasn't. I wasn't just the kid
-
0:47 - 0:48The class clown that had, you know,
-
0:48 - 0:51a funny quip from the back of the class.
-
0:51 - 0:52I mean, I was outrageous.
-
0:52 - 0:54I would, you know.
(interviewer): Right. -
0:54 - 0:56I'd call the yellow pages and
-
0:56 - 0:58hired companies to bid on an
-
0:58 - 1:00addition to the library.
-
1:00 - 1:02So there would be uh people.
-
1:02 - 1:05There would be people outside measuring
-
1:06 - 1:07and the principal would go outside
-
1:07 - 1:08and say, "What are you doing?"
-
1:08 - 1:10and they'd say "We're from so-and-so
construction company and we're gonna" -
1:10 - 1:11"bid on the addition".
-
1:11 - 1:14And he'd say, "Who authorized the addition?"
-
1:14 - 1:15And they would say, "Howie Mandel"
-
1:15 - 1:16I gave them my name.
-
1:16 - 1:17(interviewer): Laughter
-
1:17 - 1:18Yeah.
-
1:18 - 1:19The only way I could talk to girls
-
1:19 - 1:21is I would go into the girl's restroom
-
1:21 - 1:22cause I didn't look like a boy.
-
1:23 - 1:24And brush my hair in the mirror.
-
1:24 - 1:27And talk to girls who came in.
(interviewer): Did you really? -
1:27 - 1:28Yeah.
-
1:28 - 1:29(interviewer): You must be joking.
-
1:29 - 1:29(Laughter).
-
1:29 - 1:30No I'm not.
-
1:30 - 1:31That's where my wife met me.
-
1:31 - 1:33I didn't finish,
I didn't finish high school. -
1:33 - 1:34I don't have a GED.
-
1:35 - 1:37Can I still be in ABILITY?
-
1:37 - 1:38(interviewer): Yes. Laughter.
-
1:38 - 1:39(interviewer): What about your wife?
-
1:40 - 1:42She is not in school anymore.
-
1:42 - 1:43(interviewer): Laughter.
-
1:43 - 1:44(interviewer): She's off to a cabin?
-
1:44 - 1:48She is. We've been together over 30 years.
-
1:48 - 1:50We celebrated our 31st anniversary.
-
1:50 - 1:52When we got married I was doing
stand-up comedy. -
1:52 - 1:53And the next night I was playing Yuk Yuk's.
-
1:53 - 1:56So I uh, invited her on the stage.
-
1:57 - 1:59She sat in a stool on the stage
-
1:59 - 2:01and I was doing stand-up.
-
2:02 - 2:04Cause that's how I got my tickets. That's how,
-
2:04 - 2:06They flew me back up there
cause I got a gig. -
2:06 - 2:07And that's how I afforded to go to
-
2:07 - 2:08my own wedding.
-
2:08 - 2:10And then she. The next night
Terry was sitting. -
2:11 - 2:14And I said that, you know, regardless
of how the show goes, -
2:14 - 2:18I just want to welcome everybody
to my honeymoon. -
2:18 - 2:18(interviewer): Laughter.
-
2:18 - 2:19This is it.
-
2:19 - 2:20So that was our honeymoon.
-
2:20 - 2:21We didn't go anywhere.
-
2:21 - 2:22She just sat on stage.
-
2:22 - 2:23at the comedy club in Toronto.
-
2:24 - 2:24(interviewer): Wow.
-
2:24 - 2:25For three, four nights straight.
-
2:26 - 2:27♪(electronic music)♪
-
2:27 - 2:30I, I masked it for many, many, many years.
-
2:30 - 2:31Where I'd, you know,
-
2:31 - 2:32and I shook hands.
-
2:32 - 2:34You see me shaking hands in old videos.
-
2:34 - 2:37And my uhm, you know,
even right up to my talk show. -
2:37 - 2:39I'd shake everybody's hands.
-
2:39 - 2:41So I was living, you know,
-
2:41 - 2:42and I hid a lot of it.
-
2:42 - 2:44You know, I didn't, she was not in the,
-
2:44 - 2:47in the, in the bathroom with me
-
2:47 - 2:48while I'm scalding my hands, and so,
-
2:48 - 2:51so I didn't really let her in on that, but
-
2:51 - 2:55she knew that I was, like, obsessed,
-
2:55 - 2:56with, you know, washing my hands.
-
2:56 - 2:57(interviewer): Mmhm.
-
2:57 - 2:58Also, I could also,
-
2:58 - 3:00I could also cover it with logic, you know?
-
3:00 - 3:01(interviewer): Mmhm.
-
3:01 - 3:02Let's make a path of
this hotel room with towels -
3:03 - 3:05Cause you don't know when, what's
-
3:05 - 3:06dripped all over this carpet.
-
3:07 - 3:09So she would walk along my path.
-
3:09 - 3:10(interviewer): Laughter.
-
3:11 - 3:13Let's take the comforter off the bed
-
3:13 - 3:14with the salad tongs,
-
3:14 - 3:15Cause you don't know what's on the
-
3:15 - 3:17(interviewer): I agree (Laughter)
-
3:17 - 3:19you know, and she thought I was like a,
-
3:19 - 3:21I think the blacklight bothered her.
-
3:21 - 3:23(Laughter)
-
3:23 - 3:25I went and spoke up in Capitol Hill.
-
3:26 - 3:30and uhh. I tried to, that's where I lend
-
3:30 - 3:34my time and uh that's what I support.
-
3:34 - 3:35and I uh, I mean,
-
3:35 - 3:37mostly it's just about trying to
-
3:37 - 3:39remove the stigma. Because I think there's
-
3:39 - 3:43a lot of help out there and I think a lot
-
3:43 - 3:45of people could use the help and uh
-
3:45 - 3:47and as I said before, you know,
-
3:47 - 3:48my whole thing is that, I don't think
-
3:48 - 3:50there's anybody alive that
-
3:50 - 3:53could not benefit from
-
3:53 - 3:59a professional mental health person
-
3:59 - 4:01you know, being a part of their lives.
-
4:01 - 4:03You know. And I would imagine there still is
-
4:03 - 4:05a stigma attached to that. But I, you know,
-
4:05 - 4:07I didn't really take care of that.
-
4:07 - 4:09But now I'm taking care of it.
-
4:09 - 4:10Look at me. (Laughs).
-
4:11 - 4:12I'm in ABILITY magazine.
-
4:12 - 4:14(interviewer): Laughter.
-
4:14 - 4:30♪(electronic music)♪
